Fishing in Telluride

Our Favorite Places to Fish

There are so many places to fish in Telluride, but here are a few of our favorite rivers and lakes to set up shop for the day:

  • Uncompahgre River - Located less than an hour from Telluride is some of the region's best fishing! This dam-controlled river has a neverending supply of Pale Morning Dun mayfly hatches and brown trout.
  • Upper Dolores River - Located just south of Telluride, the Upper Dolores River has plenty of cutthroat and brook trout. Not to mention, stunning views of Lizard Head Pass and the Wilson range!
  • San Miguel - You'll often see fishermen lining the banks of the San Miguel River hoping to snag a fish! The best fishing is in the colder water near Telluride, where you'll find rainbow trout and cutthroat/rainbow trout.
  • Alta Lakes - Alta Lakes are just a short drive away from Telluride on a 4WD road past a ghost town! Alta is also known for being a great camping spot, so bring your gear and spend a night or two under the stars.
  • Trout Lake - This popular lake is located just south of Telluride and is easily accessible for a day trip. It's known for its stunning views, calm waters and fishing! You'll often see SUPers, kayakers and canoers exploring the lake as well.
